{"id":1452,"date":"2017-07-06T12:38:29","date_gmt":"2017-07-06T16:38:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peabody.jhu.edu\/?page_id=1452"},"modified":"2021-04-21T17:31:35","modified_gmt":"2021-04-21T21:31:35","slug":"january-20-2016","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/peabody.jhu.edu\/explore-peabody\/deans-office\/from-the-dean\/january-20-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"January 20, 2016: Dean\u2019s Incentive Grants"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>January 20, 2016: Dean\u2019s Incentive Grants<\/h2>\n<p>To Members of the Peabody Community,<\/p>\n<p>Last spring we announced the launch of a new program, the Dean\u2019s Incentive Grants, designed to foster innovation, interdisciplinary initiatives and community connectivity, three of the four pillars identified in our Breakthrough Plan.\u00a0 The Dean\u2019s Incentive Grants funds up to $15,000 for up to five faculty initiatives and up to $5,000 for up to five student initiatives in each round of grants.<\/p>\n<p>For this inaugural round, seven grants were awarded, three for students and four for faculty, from a pool of 27 applications.\u00a0 I would like to also take this opportunity to thank the members of the selection committees who carefully evaluated each application and its fit with the grant criteria.\u00a0 With that, we are delighted to announce the recipients of the first round of the Dean\u2019s Incentive Grants and offer congratulations.<\/p>\n<h3>Student<\/h3>\n<h4>Interdisciplinary<\/h4>\n<p>Jonathan Mo (BM double degree, saxophone and neuroscience)<\/p>\n<p>Nathaniel McKeever (BM double degree, jazz trumpet and material science engineering)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Research project:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<strong><em>What are the differences between on-the-spot and prepared improvisation?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Analyzes creativity by testing the hypothesis that jazz musicians given the chance to hear a chord progression and imagine or visualize an improvisation before playing it will perform significantly differently in terms of melodic-harmonic congruency, repetition, sequencing, and overall performance than those asked to improvise \u201con-the-spot,\u201d with no advance exposure to the chord progression.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Innovation<\/h4>\n<p>Rebecca Smithorn (DMA1, orchestral conducting)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Listening Lab: A New Model for Orchestral Education Programming<br \/>\nBuilds an interactive orchestral education concert that teaches students not just about the music, but<\/em>how<em>\u00a0to listen to music.
