{"id":1138,"date":"2017-07-05T11:37:46","date_gmt":"2017-07-05T15:37:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peabody.jhu.edu\/?page_id=1138"},"modified":"2025-05-22T10:10:22","modified_gmt":"2025-05-22T14:10:22","slug":"auditions","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/peabody.jhu.edu\/academics\/instruments-areas-of-study\/piano\/auditions\/","title":{"rendered":"Auditions"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Undergraduate<\/h2>\n<p>All selections should be performed from memory.<\/p>\n<h4>Pre-Screening<\/h4>\n<p>Undergraduate piano applications must upload a pre-screening video with their Peabody applications by the following deadlines:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Early Decision<\/strong>: November 1st<\/li>\n<li><strong>Regular Decision<\/strong>: December 1st<\/li>\n<li><strong>Late Admission<\/strong>: May 1st<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The video must include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A complete classical sonata<\/li>\n<li>A romantic solo work of at least 10 minutes in length <em>Several shorter works can be combined, such as Brahms Op. 118, Nos. 1-3, or a movement of a large sonata (Chopin, Schumann, etc.).\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li>A virtuosic etude<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"faculty_link\" href=\"https:\/\/peabody.jhu.edu\/audition-apply\/auditions\/audition-repertoire\/\">Learn more about Pre-Screening<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Audition Repertoire<\/h4>\n<p>The following is the subsequent audition repertoire to be submitted after pre-screening or performed at a live audition:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-tadv-p=\"keep\">Baroque: a prelude and fugue or any other work containing a fugue by J.S. Bach<\/li>\n<li data-tadv-p=\"keep\">Classical: complete sonata by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, or Schubert.\n<ul>\n<li data-tadv-p=\"keep\">Beethoven\u2019s Sonata, Op. 49 Nos 1 and 2 may <strong>not<\/strong> be used to fulfill this requirement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-tadv-p=\"keep\">Romantic: a major solo work by a 19th-century composer\n<ul>\n<li data-tadv-p=\"keep\">For example, Chopin\u2019s <em>Ballades, Scherzi, <\/em>or<em> Sonatas; <\/em>Brahms\u2019<em> Op. 118 <\/em>or <em>119 (complete); <\/em>Liszt\u2019s <em>Dante<\/em> <em>Sonata,<\/em> <em>Vallee d\u2019Obermann, <\/em>or a<em> Hungarian Rhapsody. <\/em><\/li>\n<li data-tadv-p=\"keep\">A Chopin nocturne or etude may <strong>not<\/strong> be used to fulfill this requirement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-tadv-p=\"keep\">A representative 20<sup>th <\/sup>or 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century work<\/li>\n<li data-tadv-p=\"keep\">A virtuoso etude by one of the following composers: Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Debussy, Bartok, Ligeti, or Stravinsky<\/li>\n<li data-tadv-p=\"keep\">TRANSFER STUDENTS ONLY: Present one additional virtuosic etude by Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, or Rachmaninoff<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Graduate<\/h2>\n<p>All selections should be performed from memory.<\/p>\n<h4>Pre-Screening<\/h4>\n<p>Master of Music and Graduate Performance Diploma applicants who are not current Peabody students must upload a pre-screening video to the Peabody application by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Spring Admission (MM, GPD only)<\/strong>: with your application<\/li>\n<li><strong>Regular Decision<\/strong>: December 1st<\/li>\n<li><strong>Late Admission<\/strong>: May 1st<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Repertoire includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A complete classical sonata<\/li>\n<li>A complete major romantic solo work<\/li>\n<li>A virtuosic etude<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Doctor of Musical Arts applicants must upload a pre-screening video to the Peabody application by December 1st.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-tadv-p=\"keep\">The material on the\u00a0video should be a 50-60 minutes of music that represents three style periods.<\/li>\n<li data-tadv-p=\"keep\">A video recording of a recital can be used if it was performed within the past two years.<\/li>\n<li data-tadv-p=\"keep\">Selections on the recording do not have to be the same ones you will perform for your audition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Artist Diploma applicants must upload a pre-screening video to the Peabody application by December 1.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-tadv-p=\"keep\">The material in the video should be 60-70 minutes of music of your choice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>PLEASE NOTE:<\/strong> Current Peabody students applying for the DMA and AD programs MUST submit videos for pre-screening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"faculty_link\" href=\"https:\/\/peabody.jhu.edu\/audition-apply\/auditions\/audition-repertoire\/\">Learn more about Pre-Screening<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Audition Repertoire<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Master of Music<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-tadv-p=\"keep\">Prepare a program of 50 to 60 minutes which includes three style periods.<\/li>\n<li data-tadv-p=\"keep\">A complete classical sonata, a major romantic solo work, and one virtuosic etude are required. Remaining works are to be chosen by the applicant.<\/li>\n<li data-tadv-p=\"keep\">All works must be prepared in their entirety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Graduate Performance Diploma<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-tadv-p=\"keep\">Prepare a recital program, 60 minutes in length, of repertoire representing at least three style periods and including at least two large-scale works.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Doctorate of Musical Arts<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-tadv-p=\"keep\">Prepare a program of no less than 60 minutes&#8217; duration, representing at least three style periods, and including at least two large-scale works.<\/li>\n<li data-tadv-p=\"keep\">The DMA program requires an additional interview with a faculty committee. You will be scheduled for a remote DMA interview based on preliminary results from your audition. Alternative programs (such as the GPD) may be suggested for others.
